Under the direction of the Division Dean, the position supports and facilitates instruction in Physics, Astronomy, and Engineering by preparing laboratory materials and the distribution and control of study materials and equipment and performing related work as required. Oversees and facilitates the day-to-day laboratory operations and maintains instructional equipment and technology.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday - Friday: 2:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.



EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Receives, issues, stores, and cares for equipment, materials, software, chemicals, and solutions; maintains inventory records on equipment, supplies, and other materials.
  • Operates, repairs, and adjusts a variety of equipment necessary for teaching Physics, Astronomy, and Engineering.
  • Orders, receives, issues, stores, and cares for equipment, materials, instruments, chemicals, and solutions.
  • Leads student assistants preparing laboratory apparatus, charts, displays, models, and solutions used in Physics, Astronomy, and Engineering; plans the scheduling of work so that instructional materials are ready for labs and lectures at appropriate times.
  • Assists instructors and staff in planning, organizing, preparing, and presentation of classroom and laboratory materials for areas of assignment (such as physics, astronomy, and engineering).
  • Keeps records, maintains equipment inventory, duplicates materials, or performs other clerical duties related to the operation of the department.
  • Maintains or supervises the maintenance of the stockroom, storage rooms, lab rooms, and student study areas in a clean and orderly condition; maintains the security of the stockroom and labs.
  • Reports directly to the division dean but day-to-day supervision is by Physics, Astronomy, and Engineering faculty. Under supervision, is responsible for supplies and the care and maintenance of equipment used for instructional purposes in Physics, Astronomy, and Engineering.
  • Does soldering, wiring, carpentry, and mechanical work to perform periodic maintenance, repair and adjustment of equipment and to set up equipment; performs miscellaneous troubleshooting on equipment.
  • In consultation with instructors, constructs and/or helps direct the construction of equipment for labs and demonstrations; assists in the development and integration of instructional software; assists in the operation of demonstration equipment and software.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.





MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A minimum of an Associate's in a field appropriate to this assignment.
  • One year of related experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • One year of paid laboratory experience in an appropriate field is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment, materials, supplies, and procedures specific to Physics, Astronomy, and Engineering laboratories and stockrooms.
  • Proficiency in using various lab and instructional equipment, including air tracks, PASCO computer interfaces, photogate detectors, and other specialized devices.
  • Understanding of science laboratory operations at the community college level, including relevant district and college policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience working with communities who have been traditionally underserved by higher education and experience in the pedagogy reflecting intersections of race, culture, class, ethnic, and queer communities.
  • Training in OSHA lab safety rules and regulations, ensuring a safe laboratory environment.
  • Competence in functional record-keeping, organization, and filing system techniques.
  • Proficiency in biohazardous waste and chemical waste disposal protocols.
  • Capability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and instructors in an ethnically diverse environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively.
  • Training in first aid, fire, and lab safety measures to handle emergencies effectively.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment and instruments, including skills in soldering, carpentry, and mechanical work.
